Business Contracts & Renewals

When Should a Texas Business Start Shopping for Its Next Electricity Contract?

By Lee Broker Services3 min read

Renewing commercial electricity is easier when you have time to compare offers, review the agreement and coordinate a start date. Waiting until the last bill before expiration can limit that review time.

Start with the contract you already have

Find the expiration date, renewal provisions, notice deadlines and early termination language in your current agreement. Keep the contract and any amendments together. Don’t rely only on the date you remember or a promotional email.

Set a reminder at least three months ahead

As a practical starting point, schedule an electricity review at least 90 days before your agreement ends. This is our planning suggestion, not a legal deadline or a promise that rates will be lowest then.

Larger accounts, multiple locations and businesses with unusual usage may benefit from starting earlier. Available future-start offers depend on the supplier, account and market.

Gather the information suppliers need

  • Your current agreement and its expiration date.
  • A recent electricity bill for each location.
  • A full year of monthly electricity usage, where available.
  • Interval and demand data for accounts that use it.
  • Expected moves, expansions, closures or changes in operating hours.

Your broker can help identify the account information needed for an accurate comparison.

Compare complete offers

Ask suppliers to quote the same service dates, locations and usage assumptions. Review what the quoted rate includes, what can be passed through, the proposed contract length and any volume requirements.

A price is easier to evaluate when it is tied to your operation and supported by clear contract terms.

Coordinate the start date before signing

Confirm that the next agreement’s service date lines up with your current contract and any switching requirements. Signing a future-start agreement and starting service early are different things. An early switch can trigger charges under your existing contract.

There is no guaranteed best month to renew

Electricity prices respond to many market factors. Starting the review early gives your business more time to evaluate options; it does not guarantee savings or eliminate market risk.

Build renewal planning into your calendar

For a multi-location business, keep a list of service addresses, suppliers and contract dates. Update it when a location opens, closes or changes service. Assign someone to check renewal reminders and supplier notices.
