Understanding Electricity Plans

Free nights and weekends: Does your usage fit the plan?

By Lee Broker Services2 min read

A free-nights or free-weekends plan is a time-of-use offer: different hours can have different pricing. It may suit some households, but the offer needs to match when your household actually uses electricity.

What does “free” include?

Read the Electricity Facts Label for the exact hours, days and charges covered. Some offers credit the energy charge during eligible hours while delivery charges, monthly fees and taxes still apply. Do not assume every charge disappears during the free period.

Compare the paid hours, too

The rate outside the promotional window matters. A household that uses substantial electricity during the afternoon may have a different result from one that can schedule much of its usage overnight.

For a simplified energy-only example, suppose paid hours cost 20¢ per kWh and free hours cost 0¢. At 1,000 kWh with 40% used in free hours, 600 paid kWh costs $120. At only 20% free-hour usage, 800 paid kWh costs $160. Other charges are excluded, and these are invented prices, not an available plan.

Use your actual hourly pattern

  • Review interval usage from your utility or meter-data account when available.
  • Check the exact free window and seasonal conditions.
  • Include unavoidable daytime heating, cooling and appliance use.
  • Compare the full estimated bill against a non-time-of-use alternative.

We can help you ask the right questions and understand the comparison. The goal is a plan that fits your routine, with expectations you can trust throughout the relationship.
